In today’s global economy, the international language of both business and law is English. Therefore, the Legal English course is designed to familiarize participants with English legal jargon in various areas of law. Using English legal terminology without properly understanding the concepts behind the terms could possibly cause confusion and mistakes. The way a native English speaking attorney interprets a legal term may be different from his or her legal counterpart who is not a native English speaker.
This course is an introduction to the common-law legal system and aims to present a practical approach to the legal system of the United States of America. This course will cover a broad spectrum of legal areas relevant to today’s lawyers, including contract law, negligence, intellectual property and corporate law, among others. Students will learn how to present legal arguments in English. They will also be required to work together in groups on various legal assignments. Finally, the course will touch on knowledge of legal terminology that are covered in the Test of Legal English Skills (TOLES). Examination throughout the course.
